Make the call to stop B.C. LNG

A quick phone call can make a big impact — especially in an election year

The lead-up to the provincial election is a great time to voice to the B.C. government your strong and clear opposition to LNG. Because many are seeking re-election, this window of time is when they are most attuned to public opinion.

Use this tool and suggested speaking points to make one (or more) phone calls to B.C. cabinet ministers to help put an end to expansion of dangerous liquefied natural gas projects. LNG is a polluting, unhealthy, environmentally damaging and economically risky fossil fuel.

We can’t expand fossil fuels in the midst of a climate crisis, especially when there are safe, reliable, more affordable alternatives.

Here are some suggested speaking points. Please re-mix and personalize them to have the greatest impact possible. The priority is asking if they’ll oppose LNG expansion in the province in the lead-up to the next election and providing contact information so you can hear their response.

  • Introduce yourself (E.g., I’m a grandmother, immigrant, farmer, student, etc.)
  • Ask: In the lead-up to the provincial election, will you and your government commit to stopping the expansion of dangerous LNG —a polluting, unhealthy, environmentally damaging and economically risky fossil fuel?
  • Share your email address and tell them you’d like a response.
  • Tell them why you are concerned about LNG expansion in B.C. Choose one below, or share your own:
    • The world’s leading climate science and energy market experts have been saying, over and over again, that we can’t build any more fossil fuel projects anywhere in the world if we want a livable planet.
    • Investments in LNG lock up billions of dollars of investment capital and could limit the growth in renewable energy and the many benefits that come it.
    • Fracking for gas consumes more than five billion litres of water every year in northeast B.C., which is already experiencing Stage 5 drought conditions — in the middle of winter! A fracking boom would require much more water, putting communities and ecosystems at greater risk of drought and water restrictions.
    • LNG is increasingly a very risky bet for the economy. Economists predict a decline in Asian markets for B.C. LNG, leaving the province with stranded assets.
    • Liquefied “natural” gas isn’t very natural at all. It is harmful to public health and is produced by pumping toxic chemicals deep into the earth. Fracking also leads to seismic destabilization and earthquakes.
  • End by repeating the question you have for them and be sure to tell them you will be awaiting their response:
    • In the lead-up to the provincial election, will you and your government commit to stopping the expansion of dangerous LNG — a polluting, unhealthy, environmentally damaging and economically risky fossil fuel?
  • Don’t forget to leave them with your contact information.

How the call will go:

Our system makes calling key B.C. politicians easy. We’ll connect you through your phone to their office. On some occasions you can speak to one of the ministers, but usually you will reach an assistant or leave a voicemail. Once the call rings through to your phone, use the talking points above as guides.

  • When you click the MAKE THE CALL button, you will receive a call from 604 330 5054. Answer the call and it will patch you through to one of the cabinet ministers. PLEASE HAVE YOUR PHONE READY.
  • Use a headset or hands-free — This will give you both hands to take notes about what was said.
  • Be polite but firm and direct — Make sure to ask for a response to your question and provide them with return contact information. An email is preferable for them
  • Thank them for their time and attention.
