Success! After years of fighting against fossil fuel projects in Quebec (Energy East, Anticosti Island, GNL Quebec, etc.), on April 12, 2022, the National Assembly adopted Bill 21, an act to end exploration and production of hydrocarbons and public financing of these activities.
By becoming the first jurisdiction in the world to ban oil and gas development on its territory, Quebec is sending a clear message to the international community: fossil fuels must be a thing of the past.
It’s thanks to you that we achieved this historic win! Almost 30,000 of you signed the petition “No more handouts to the oil and gas industry!” calling for an anti-drilling law that does not give public money to oil and gas companies. Even though compensation was retained in the law, we achieved:
- Rapid closure of wells after the law’s adoption (maximum 12 months);
- Inspections to verify that wells have been properly closed and the sites properly rehabilitated;
- Lower compensation for oil and gas companies;
- Better transparency.
Thank you for supporting us. Your participation encourages us to continue our work for a greener and more inclusive Quebec.
