Budget 2025 left nature in limbo

Budget 2025 sent mixed messages on climate and left nature in limbo.

The good? The budget commits to strengthening two key federal climate regulations: limiting methane emissions from oil and gas and improving industrial carbon pricing. It also affirmed the goal of achieving a clean electricity grid and recognized nature as a core part of Canada’s identity that must be protected.

The bad? The budget abandoned Canada’s oil and gas emissions cap as industry’s emissions grow and re-introduced a subsidy for liquefied natural gas — a reversal of past progress to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.

The major gaps? Budget 2025 did not make the necessary investments to build an east-west clean electricity grid. Moreover, the budget did not commit any new funding for nature protection and restoration or for Canada’s Chemicals Management Program. Current funding for these programs will run out in spring.

Send a message to your MP and Canada’s finance minister to highlight these gaps! It’s not too late for Canada to re-invest in clean electricity, nature and healthy environments!

Even if the budget is a done deal, it doesn’t have to be the final word. The government plans to issue a “mini budget” next spring and could announce additional funding even sooner.

Send a letter to your MP and let them know that building Canada strong means being clear-eyed on climate and investing in nature and healthy environments.
