Sherry Yano
Director, Engagement and Sustainable Communities
Expertise: Engineering, community planning, rights-holder/stakeholder/community engagement, inclusive program development and delivery with a justice lens, communications and storytelling.
Credentials: A bachelor of applied science in chemical engineering (University of Waterloo), a master of science in planning and development (University of Guelph), research awards from IDRC, CIDA and University of Guelph, and continued education in communications, engagement and facilitation (SFU, BCIT, CBC and others).
Passions: At the David Suzuki Foundation, we are very keen to understand how we can support and contribute to the larger climate and environmental justice movements.
We get to meet and collaborate with so many brilliant and diverse people through our work, and hope we can continue to grow and strengthen networks of solidarity, care, mutual learning and joy together.
Outside work, I love swimming, cycling, gardening, good books, thought-provoking art and time with friends and family. (I’m currently reading Omar El Akkad’s One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This, and can’t recommend it enough!)
We can’t tackle climate change without confronting the systems of inequity that allow it to happen … Only an imbalance of voice and power can enable the few to reap benefit on the backs of the many. If we allow our systems to skirt true reconciliation, equity and inclusion, the risks to all of us will grow unchecked.
