MONTREAL | TRADITIONAL, UNCEDED TERRITORY OF THE KANIEN’KEHÁ:KA FIRST NATION, April 4th, 2025 — Ahead of the federal election, four of the five main political parties — the Bloc Québécois, the Green Party of Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada and the New Democratic Party — have committed to upholding the Quebec Environmental Consensus in their respective political platforms.
For Quebec voters, this initiative — led by the Vire au vert coalition (a group of about 20 Quebec civil society organizations) — represents the bare minimum needed to ensure the credibility of environmental proposals in electoral platforms.
The Conservative Party of Canada has yet to endorse the Consensus, despite multiple outreach efforts by Vire au vert since the Consensus was launched last October.
“Who we are”
According to the Vire au vert coalition, the Quebec Environmental Consensus is not a wish list of idealistic or radical demands, but a set of fundamental principles for climate and environmental action.
For example, our water, lakes and rivers are precious and must be protected from pollution, and our agricultural lands are essential to our food resilience. See the full list of Consensus principles.
“These are political and social choices that have shaped Quebec’s development, that define who we are as a nation and as a people,” the coalition’s member groups said.
