OTTAWA – Reacting to the federal government announcement of billions in aid for the oil and gas sector, including $1.7B to clean up orphan wells and a $750-million emissions reduction fund with a focus on methane, the David Suzuki Foundation CEO Stephen Cornish said:
“We welcome these announcements that secure jobs for workers and have the potential to unite Canadians on a transformational path – not only for our energy sector, but for our entire economy. Government must guarantee that public funds go to companies that are sound and solidly engaged in the just transition to a clean economy, and not to those resisting change while creating increased financial uncertainty.”
In regards to the efforts to cut methane pollution, Cornish added:
“Everyone has a collective responsibility to act on the climate crisis, and reducing dangerous methane pollution will both create jobs immediately while also helping Canada meet its climate targets.”
