OTTAWA | TRADITIONAL, UNCEDED TERRITORY OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHNAABEG PEOPLE — The final round of negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty, an international legal agreement on plastic pollution (INC-5.2), will take place next week in Switzerland.

Sabaa Khan, Climate Director and Director General for Quebec and Atlantic Canada at the David Suzuki Foundation, is attending INC-5.2 in Geneva as an official observer and will be monitoring fossil fuel and petrochemical industry influence on negotiations.

In March 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly adopted a resolution to convene an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an instrument that would address the whole life cycle of plastic with the aim of ending pollution globally. The David Suzuki Foundation’s recommendations on the treaty were submitted to negotiating parties at the fourth and fifth sessions.

Negotiations should have been completed in December in Busan, South Korea, but no agreement was reached, so INC-5.2 is taking place in Geneva August 5 to 14.
