David Suzuki Foundation supports protests in Vancouver, Ottawa, Toronto

VANCOUVER | UNCEDED xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (MUSQUEAM), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (SQUAMISH) AND səlilwətaɬ (TSLEIL-WAUTUTH) TERRITORIES — The David Suzuki Foundation is joining thousands of people across Canada and around the world to peacefully protest the fossil fuel industry and its lead role in driving the climate crisis. After a summer of devastating climate impacts, the Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels will include more than 400 actions around the world from Friday, September 15, to Sunday, September 17.

The David Suzuki Foundation is supporting protests across Canada, including events in Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto and Ottawa.

  • David Suzuki Foundation executive director Severn Cullis-Suzuki will speak at the Vancouver event on Friday (Sept 15), alongside Foundation public engagement and mobilization lead Janelle Lapointe.
  • David Suzuki will speak at the Victoria event on Friday (Sept 15).

The climate strikes come ahead of the United Nations General Assembly the following week, which will include the UN Climate Ambition Summit on Wednesday, September 20.

The David Suzuki Foundation is calling on Canada’s government to cap oil and gas industry emissions and support the move to 100 per cent emissions-free electricity.

Severn Cullis-Suzuki, Executive Director, David Suzuki Foundation said:

“We’re mobilizing here and around the world to end our reliance on fossil fuels. The fossil fuel industry is using its power and resources to delay climate action until the last possible drop. Citizens are now demanding an end to this era of fossil fuel supremacy.

“It’s been a summer of reckoning across Canada, with fires, floods and drought. Yet there are currently no limits to the amount of climate pollution Canada’s oil and gas industry can produce. We’re in desperate need for the government to regulate this climate-wrecking industry.

“By phasing out fossil fuels, we will make way for all the climate solutions such as wind and solar that are now the cheapest forms of electricity in history. Communities and individuals can all benefit from the transition to renewable power.”
