Through the popular Butterflyway Project, DSF encourages gardeners to grow native plants that support pollinators and other wild animals.
A native plant is a plant that has existed in an area for millennia and has evolved along with other native species of plants, animals, fungi and bacteria in the presence of native soil and climatic conditions. Native plants play an important and foundational role in ecosystems. They provide food, shelter and nesting material for insects, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles.
Despite their beauty and ecological importance, native plants remain a mystery to many people, and are hard to find in gardens and nurseries. That is why DSF created Seed Sitters. With a little guidance, you can become your own source of native plants!
Seed Sitters is an inexpensive and simple way to grow native plants for personal use and/or to share in your community. This project has the added benefit of keeping us connected to our gardens and each other through the colder months.
You will be surprised how easy it is to grow native wildflowers and grasses from seed through winter sowing on a balcony or in a backyard.
