Canada’s upcoming federal election is a key time to get informed and involved to help elect strong environmental leaders. It’s more important than ever to protect the environment and each other.
Canada’s federal election will be called any day now. This is a critical time in Canadian history as we face economic turmoil from inflation and a trade war with our biggest trading partner, threats to our sovereignty from the U.S. and the increasingly urgent climate and biodiversity crises.
Although we can’t control decisions south of the border, we can control how we respond. That means ensuring that climate and nature are prioritized in this election and by the next government to make sure everyone can enjoy a safe, healthy, affordable future.
Why strong environmental leadership in Canada matters more than ever
The future is brighter for every generation when we take care of the environment and each other. Investing in climate solutions — such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and conservation — creates cleaner air, better health and more affordable energy. Strong leadership can protect wildlife, halt habitat destruction and support Indigenous-led conservation.
As wildfires, droughts, floods and extreme weather become more frequent and intense, families and communities in Canada will bear the brunt. Many people could be out of home, out of pocket and paying higher insurance rates. Strong environmental policies are needed to safeguard communities, the economy and our wellbeing.
With the U.S. abandoning its international environmental commitments, it’s more important than ever for Canadians to take a stand to prioritize people and the planet over polluters’ profits.
You’re not alone. Majority of Canadians support protecting nature and the climate
People throughout Canada take pride in our vast natural landscapes and want us to do our part in the global fight against climate change.
A new Leger national survey shows that:
- 67 per cent agree that the next Canadian government should make climate action and protecting nature a high priority
- 65 per cent agree that Canada should invest in renewable energy instead of fossil fuel developments
- 62 per cent agree that Canada should maintain its climate commitments independent of the United States administration’s decisions, including its withdrawal from the UN Paris Agreement on climate.
We must work across party lines in this election to elect candidates who will be strong environmental leaders.
