This annual report presents findings from the 2025 Butterflies in My Backyard (BIMBY) project — a national community science initiative led by the David Suzuki Foundation, in collaboration with University of British Columbia researchers and volunteers across Canada.
BIMBY invites participants — known as BIMBY Seekers — to document butterfly sightings using iNaturalist, contributing to a growing database of biodiversity observations.
Since 2022, participants have recorded more than 230 butterfly species and contributed over 100,000 observations. This data helps researchers understand where species are found, how their activity is changing and which plants they rely on.
In 2025 alone, BIMBY Seekers submitted 35,448 observations across 235 species — representing 28 per cent of all butterfly observations on iNaturalist in Canada that year. Of these, 26,809 reached research-grade status, meaning they were verified by experts and can be used in scientific analysis.
By combining community participation with research, BIMBY strengthens understanding of butterfly ecology while helping people build a deeper connection with nature.
