This report focuses on modelling different policies to achieve the federal zero emission vehicle target and bring down transportation sector emissions. It finds that despite signs that auto manufacturers are investing in ZEV manufacturing, existing policies, investments in charging infrastructure, voluntary industry efforts, technological change and evolving consumer preferences would result in just 38 per cent of new vehicles sold in 2035 being ZEVs. The federal government has options for achieve ZEV targets that are not cost-prohibitive and retain a profitable automotive sector, but it must put regulations in place quickly.
